Netflix’s long-running drama Virgin River is preparing for a notable cast change as two familiar faces will not return for the upcoming eighth season. The streaming platform confirmed that Marco Grazzini and Lauren Hammersley will depart the series after the currently airing seventh season.

The announcement came on the same day the new season of Virgin River premiered on Netflix, drawing immediate attention from fans who have followed the small-town drama since its debut. Both Marco Grazzini and Lauren Hammersley have been closely associated with the series for several years, making their exit one of the most significant cast adjustments in recent seasons.

Marco Grazzini joined Virgin River several seasons ago and has appeared in the show for five seasons overall. Over the last four seasons, his character Mike Valenzuela, a local police officer, has been part of the main cast. In the seventh season, Mike becomes involved in a major storyline alongside his romantic interest Brie, played by Zibby Allen, as the pair attempt to locate Charmaine, a character portrayed by Lauren Hammersley.

Meanwhile, Lauren Hammersley has been part of Virgin River since the series first launched in 2019. Her character Charmaine initially appeared as a romantic interest for Jack, the central character played by Martin Henderson. Over time, Charmaine’s complicated storyline—including a long-running pregnancy plot—became one of the show’s most discussed arcs. Although Lauren Hammersley remained associated with the series for years, she transitioned into a recurring role in later seasons and appears only briefly in the latest ten-episode installment.

Despite the departure of Marco Grazzini and Lauren Hammersley, showrunner Patrick Sean Smith has indicated that the door remains open for their characters to return in the future. Speaking about the decision, Patrick Sean Smith explained that maintaining the longevity of Virgin River requires carefully balancing storylines and ensuring that the remaining characters continue to have meaningful narrative arcs.

He noted that some characters eventually reach a natural conclusion within the story, which sometimes leads the creative team to introduce new characters while allowing others to step away temporarily.

In the season seven finale of Virgin River, Mike Valenzuela appears to receive a satisfying resolution to his storyline. The episode shows him reconnecting with a new character, Victoria, played by Sara Canning, suggesting a hopeful new chapter for the character. According to Patrick Sean Smith, this moment was designed as a fitting pause for Mike’s storyline, though he expressed openness to bringing Marco Grazzini back if a compelling story emerges.

As for Charmaine, Patrick Sean Smith confirmed that there are currently no plans for the character to appear in season eight. However, he also suggested that the creative team would consider revisiting the character if the right opportunity arises in the future.

Since its debut, Virgin River has remained one of Netflix’s longest-running drama series, largely retaining much of its original cast. Still, several departures have occurred over the years. Actors such as Grayson Gurnsey left the show after season four, while Mark Ghanimé exited following season six.

With season eight already in development, the departure of Marco Grazzini and Lauren Hammersley marks another transition for Virgin River. Even so, the series continues to evolve while maintaining the small-town storytelling and character relationships that have kept audiences invested since the beginning.
