Korean horror is finally seeing a major theatrical breakthrough again.

According to the Korean Box Office Information System (KOBIS), Salmokji: Whispering Water officially surpassed 2 million moviegoers on April 27, marking a major milestone for both the film and the broader Korean horror genre.

The achievement makes Salmokji: Whispering Water only the second Korean film released in 2026 to cross the 2 million admissions mark, following The King’s Warden.

More significantly, the film has now become the first Korean horror movie in eight years to surpass 2 million viewers—a feat not seen since the massive success of Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum.

The milestone is especially notable given how difficult the post-pandemic theatrical market has been for horror releases.

While Korean horror has continued to attract streaming audiences in recent years, few titles have managed to generate major box office momentum in cinemas.

That makes Salmokji: Whispering Water’s performance one of the genre’s most meaningful commercial wins in recent memory.

To celebrate the achievement, cast members Kim Hye Yoon, Lee Jong Won, Kim Jun Han, Kim Young Sung, Oh Dong Min, Yoon Jae Chan, and Jang Da A gathered with director Lee Sang Min for a commemorative group photo.

In a playful nod to the milestone, the cast used rocks to create the number two, symbolizing the film’s 2 million admissions achievement.

Salmokji: Whispering Water follows a production crew that returns to a remote reservoir after an unidentified figure appears in previously recorded road-view footage.

Tasked with reshooting the material, the crew arrives at Salmokji only to encounter an increasingly terrifying supernatural presence hidden within the dark waters.

The film’s eerie premise, combined with strong word-of-mouth and growing audience curiosity, appears to have helped fuel its impressive theatrical run.

With Salmokji: Whispering Water now setting a new benchmark for modern Korean horror films, the movie’s success could signal renewed confidence in theatrical horror releases after years of uncertainty.
